Quacking Back with Charlotte Squawks

May 30, 2019 | By Porter Metzler | Creative News | For Newcomers | Happenings

Charlotte Squawks is a summer tradition in Charlotte. And, it’s quacking back again. The annual musical parody show that views the Queen City through a satirical lens celebrated its 15th opening night last night … and it’ll keep on ruffling feathers until June 23 at the Booth Playhouse. This year’s show — titled Charlotte Squawks 15: Quackceañera — promises to bring its own special brand of comedy to the Queen City by spoofing on the pop culture, sports and political trends of Charlotte. Think of the show as Charlotte’s satirical year-in-review. Brian Kahn, head scriptwriter for Charlotte Squawks, describes the performances as “Broadway meets Saturday…

The Business of Murals in a City of Business

April 23, 2019 | By Tim Miner | CLT Creatives | Creative News | Editor's Pick | Editorials | Exploring Charlotte | For Newcomers

It was the summer solstice of 2017. The temperature hovered just below 100 degrees. As the sun beat down on him, Jonay di Ragno painted a mural in NoDa. And, he was having the time of his life. “I was having fun. People bringing me slices of pizza and Sprite and beer,” di Ragno remembers. “I was going to start at 8 am and stop later, but people were so interested in the process, they would not let me finish. [When I went to the bathroom and came back], people were already taking pictures. [The work wasn’t even at] 50% of my vision. They were…

SHARE Charlotte: 9 Unique Ways for Teens to Give Their Time

April 10, 2019 | By Nicole Copsis, SHARE Charlotte | CLT Nonprofits | Editorials | For Newcomers | How To/Resources

At The Biscuit, we get excited about handing the reins over to tomorrow’s emerging leaders. Leadership is leadership. Inviting teens and young adults into creative public service is our jam. And, when we saw this article by chief storyteller, Nicole Copsis, published on the SHARE Charlotte blog, we had to share it. Let’s face it- service hours can sometimes feel like that thing you “have to do” with your free time, instead of that thing you are looking forward to doing in your spare time. But, what if you used your service hours as a time to explore your own interests and strengthen your skill…

April 10, 2019 | By The Biscuit Staff | CLT Creatives | Exploring Charlotte | For Newcomers

We’re always talent scouting for emerging Instagram accounts that look at The Queen City (and the world) with an enthralling perspective. Here are four of our faves. They may not have a bajillion followers, but they absolutely should. @QC_Javi Why do we love it? Javier has an infectious grin and a discerning eye that expresses boundless enthusiasm for Charlotte. After spending two minutes on this feed, even the most cynical Charlottean has to smile.  Watching him explore the Queen City relentlessly is a joy. For those of us who can claim to be “O.G. CLT,” it’s like falling in love with Crown Town all over…

Stone Cold Coke on Morehead

February 26, 2019 | By The Biscuit Staff | Exploring Charlotte | For Newcomers

Welcome to another installment of “Uncommon Details.” When thinking about how many of us interact with the Queen City, we find truth the wise words of modern philosopher, Ferris Bueller: “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” Wise words. And, we here at The Biscuit are trying or best to live by them on your behalf. Instead of simply walking past (or zooming past at 100 miles an hour), we try to slow our roll so we can spot and highlight the little details that often get missed in Charlotte. Here’s one… The…

Learn More about MoRA

January 28, 2019 | By Faron Franks | CLT Nonprofits | Exploring Charlotte | For Newcomers

This neighborhood profile was submitted by Faron Franks, a Principal at the firm Shook Kelley Architects and resident of MoRA. It started with the house. A Realtor calling to say, “I think I found what you’re looking for.” Then a soggy, skeptical drive to McClintock Woods ended with that feeling you always hear about –  when the house says “Yes!” and you say “Yes!” After months of looking at every conceivable possibility, he did indeed show me what I asked for. But, was this really where I wanted to make my home? Ultimately, I said yes to that, too. Five years later I still say it…
