The #CLTAvengers Pick Their Favorite June Jams

June 11, 2019 | By Creative Correspondents | Exploring Charlotte | Happenings

When Charlotte SHOUT! took over the Queen City in mid-May, The Biscuit put out the call and assemble the team of city’s mightiest Instagrammers to cover all the excitement and spark joy. (We hear you, Marie Kondo.) We called them “Creative Correspondents.” After just one day, they dubbed themselves the #CLTAvengers … and it stuck. SHOUT! may be quiet right now, but June is chock full of fun. But, where to start? The #CLTAvengers are still out there, exploring Charlotte and sharing their love of the Queen City on the interweb every day. So, we’ve asked five of them to each share one event they’re…

VIEWFINDER: CreativeMornings/Charlotte on June 3

June 11, 2019 | By Heather Liebler | Happenings | Photography

The Charlotte community is brimming with creativity at every corner. But, it’s impossible to experience it all. When you can’t be there in person, the fun and excitement are often lost in the telling. Here at The Biscuit, we’re not into describing events you may have missed, but we love looking at them through the lens of one of Charlotte’s incredibly talented photographers. In this case, it’s Heather Liebler who shot last Friday’s CreativeMornings event at Discovery Place where Rebecca Henderson spoke on the topic of “Wonder.” Enjoy Heather’s photos below and check out more of her work here. Attend the Next CreativeMornings/Charlotte The next…

Quacking Back with Charlotte Squawks

May 30, 2019 | By Porter Metzler | Creative News | For Newcomers | Happenings

Charlotte Squawks is a summer tradition in Charlotte. And, it’s quacking back again. The annual musical parody show that views the Queen City through a satirical lens celebrated its 15th opening night last night … and it’ll keep on ruffling feathers until June 23 at the Booth Playhouse. This year’s show — titled Charlotte Squawks 15: Quackceañera — promises to bring its own special brand of comedy to the Queen City by spoofing on the pop culture, sports and political trends of Charlotte. Think of the show as Charlotte’s satirical year-in-review. Brian Kahn, head scriptwriter for Charlotte Squawks, describes the performances as “Broadway meets Saturday…

200Artists: SouthEnd ARTS Helps Artists Find Their Voice (and Each Other)

May 28, 2019 | By Porter Metzler | CLT Creatives | Creative News | Happenings | How To/Resources

Charlotte’s a growing city. And, that can mean growing pains. New restaurants, breweries and apartments seem to pop up all across the city overnight, but when these businesses come in, artists are often displaced. While it’s exciting to see our city expand, it is important to realize the impact these new spaces create on our community.  As recently as 2017, over 100 artists in South End lost their affordable studio and exhibition spaces. The lack of affordable studio spaces led to the creation of SouthEnd ARTS in 2018 and later, their grassroots 200Artists movement. The dynamic of SouthEnd’s art community was struggling with the changes…

“The RE: Series” Tackles the Power of Art and Design

May 16, 2019 | By Matt Olin | CLT Creatives | Creative News | Happenings

Wouldn’t it be awesome to get into a time machine, go back, and examine Charlotte’s past? Or perhaps, sometimes, even change it? Obviously, we can’t do that. (Plus, Avengers: Endgame warned us about changing the past, anyway. Right?) We can only affect the future, and that’s what “The RE: Series” is all about. The RE: Series is a new thought leadership speaker series presented by Crescent Communities, Ally Bank and Asana Partners, and produced in collaboration with our team at Charlotte Is Creative. We designed the RE: Series from the ground up to be a little different than your traditional speaker series. All of its…

May 16, 2019 | By The Biscuit Staff | CLT Creatives | Editorials | Exploring Charlotte | Happenings

Last weekend, the inaugural Charlotte SHOUT! took over Uptown, SouthEnd and Camp North End for three days of creative revelry that capped off three weeks of over 200 artistic events — festivals, concerts, art installations, etc. – celebrating the Queen City’s 250th anniversary. For more information, visit CharlotteShout.com and click here to see the team behind SHOUT!, organized by Charlotte Center City Partners. With this many events enveloping Charlotte in 72 hours, it’s impossible for any one publication to cover … well … everything. That’s why The Biscuit chose to assemble a team of “Creative Correspondents” to cover the event with help from Porter Metzler…

There Can Be Only One DJ to Reign Over the Queen City

May 8, 2019 | By Tim Miner | CLT Creatives | Exploring Charlotte | Happenings | Music

Some may say that the glory days of epic DJ battles are over. Charlotte musician and producer, Dae Lee, says they’ve just started. When he heard about Charlotte SHOUT! and its focus on music, Lee decided the time had come to revive a time-honored tradition of DJs fighting it out to see whose skills reigned supreme in the club scene. He shared this idea with Charlotte Center City Partners as a way to celebrate Charlotte’s 250th anniversary and … with a little help from friends at Music Everywhere CLT, Party Rocker and CLT Loft Sessions … CLT DJ Battle was born. The DJ showdown will…

CLT Crushes The WFAE Podquest

February 11, 2019 | By Tim Miner | Happenings

We Charlotteans have a lot to say. But, you probably already knew that. WFAE definitely found out in a big way when they received a whopping 370+ submissions for their inaugural Queen City Podquest competition, which offered Charlotte podcasters the chance to vie for one of five one-on-one mentorship with WFAE’s programming team and, possibly, cash prize and a chance to land a coveted podcast on the public radio station’s network. Okay, so interest was high with podasters. How about from the public? Well, on the first day the public could vote on their favorite podcast, they crashed WFAE’s voting system. So … pretty high….

73 Steps to Greatness

February 11, 2019 | By Amanda Fowler | CLT Nonprofits | Creative News | Happenings

The best way to get the blood flowing to your creative brain on a Friday morning is by taking four flights of stairs … right? RIGHT? Boasting a rock star lineup of city council members Braxton Winston, Dimple Ajmera, Tariq Bokhari and Larken Eagletson, the February 1 meeting of CreativeMornings/Charlotte was held on the top floor of the LakePointe 3 office space thanks to a generous donation of space from Trinity Parnters. Still, it takes a lot to efficiently usher 500+ creatives to their morning coffee on the fourth floor. The group needed to motivate attendees to take the stairs. And, that presented an opportunity….
